Description: Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) exist to provide supplemental services within their areas. Annual assessments are paid by businesses and property owners. These fees are used to provide supplementary services such as street and sidewalk cleaning, beautification, private security, and marketing. The improvements and services are intended to attract more visitors and to increase economic opportunities.Various types of BIDs exist in San Jose, including Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), Property Based Improvement Districts (PBIDs), and Community Benefit Improvement Districts (CBIDs); these are all similar with slight variations in implementation. California State Laws such as the Parking and Business Improvement Area Law of 1989 and the Property and Business Improvement District law of 2004 enable the creation of improvement districts. When working with this data, it is recommended to consider the ""Type"" field which shows whether a district is a BID, PBID, CBID, etc. Additionally, some districts have multiple Zones which are found in the ""Zone"" Field. Lastly, the ""District Status"" field shows whether a particular district is Active or Proposed (there are currently no inactive or disbanded districts).
